Agent Skills for Net Forge (SKILL.md)

Last updated Checked against @netforge/engine 0.2.0View as Markdown

Net Forge, the open-source multiplayer browser game engine built for AI coding agents, is published on npm under @netforge with source at github.com/netnetdev/net-forge.

The netforge package ships four Agent Skills, each a folder with a SKILL.md that an agent loads when the task matches its description. Together they cover the whole loop: create a game from a template, change src/game.ts, validate and playtest with bots, and play it in the browser.

npx skills add netnetdev/net-forge

Or copy them yourself into your agent's skills folder:

npx netforge skills list
npx netforge skills copy .claude/skills

The four skills

SkillWhen the agent uses it
netforge-create-gameThe user asks to make, scaffold or start a browser game, a multiplayer game, a co-op game or an .io-style game. It picks one of the ten templates and runs npm create netforge@latest.
netforge-add-contentThe user asks to add an enemy, a boss, a weapon, a power-up, a reward or to rebalance the game. It edits src/game.ts with the typed declarations.
netforge-playtestAfter every change, or when the user asks whether the game works, is fun or is balanced. It validates the game module and runs headless bot playtests.
netforge-play-locallyThe user wants to try or see the game, or test multiplayer in several tabs. It starts local play with play money.

What a skill looks like

A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md: a short front matter with a name and a description that says when to use it, then the steps and rules. This is the start of netforge-create-game:

---
name: netforge-create-game
description: Start a new multiplayer browser game with Net Forge from one of ten finished genre templates (survivor-like, arena shooter, tower defense, dungeon crawl, idle, platformer, card battler, monster collector, kart racer, party). Use when the user asks to make, scaffold or start a browser game, a multiplayer game, a co-op game or an .io-style game.
---

# Create a Net Forge game

1. Pick the template that matches the request.
2. Create the folder: npm create netforge@latest my-game -- --template survivor --yes
3. cd my-game && npm install
4. Read AGENTS.md in the new folder, then make the user's changes in src/game.ts.
5. Validate and playtest, then let the user play it.

Skills work alongside the MCP server: with it, the skills call tools such as netforge_create_game and netforge_run_playtest; without it, they use the CLI. See Set up your coding agent.

FAQ

What are Agent Skills?

Folders of instructions, each with a SKILL.md, that a coding agent loads on demand when a task matches the skill's description. Claude Code and other agents that support the format read them from a skills folder.

Where do I put the Net Forge skills for Claude Code?

In .claude/skills in your project, or ~/.claude/skills for every project: npx netforge skills copy .claude/skills.

Do I need the skills if I use the MCP server?

No, but they help. The MCP server gives the agent tools; the skills tell it when and in what order to use them, and what the rules of src/game.ts are.

Do the skills need a network connection or an API key?

No API key. They are plain markdown. Installing them and the packages needs the network once; after that, the commands they run work offline.
